Caim
Alternatively Caimo.
A demon that once belonged to the Order Of Angels and supposedly gives to men an understanding of animals and nature.
Sometimes Caim appears as a blackbird that quickly transforms himself into a sword-wielding warrior. It is said that he likes to argue, if so disposed. He is the fifty-third of Solomon's seventy-two spirits.
Joannes Wierus ('Pseudomonarchia Daemonum', 1577) referred to Caim as a Great President of Hell:
"Caim is a great president, taking the forme of a thrush, but when he putteth on man's shape, he answereth in burning ashes, carrieng in his hand a most sharpe swoord, he maketh the best disputers, he giveth men the understanding of all birds, of the lowing of bullocks, and barking of dogs, and also of the sound and noise of waters, he answereth best of things to come, he was of the order of angels, and ruleth thirtie legions of divels."
In the 'Goetia' of S. L. MacGregor Mathers, this is how Caim is described:
"The Fifty-third Spirit is Camio, or Caim. He is a Great President, and appeareth in the Form of the Bird called a Thrush at first, but afterwards he putteth on the Shape of a Man carrying in his Hand a Sharp Sword. He seemeth to answer in Burning Ashes, or in Coals of Fire. He is a Good Disputer. His Office is to give unto Men the Understanding of all Birds, Lowing of Bullocks, Barking of Dogs, and other Creatures; and also of the Voice of the Waters. He giveth True Answers of Things to Come. He was of the Order of Angels, but now ruleth over 30 Legions of Spirits Infernal."
And in Collin de Plancy's 'Dictionnaire Infernal', 1863:
"Once with the order of angels, and currently, high president of hell, Caym commands 30 legions. He appears in the form of a blackbird, a main coifed with a headdress & adorned with a peacock tail, or human carrying a tapering sword, & responds from the midst of a burning brazier. It is said that Caym is the most wise occupant of hell, and that he could outwit even the most seasoned logician. It was with him that Luther had his famous dispute from which he spared us the details. Caym teaches communication with animals and waves and knows of the future."
Christianity positioned Satan or Beelzebub at the head of the ranks of demons, and Islam designated Iblis or Satan as the leader of a host of evil jinn.
Hinduism has numerous demons, called asuras, who oppose the devas (gods). In Buddhism demons are seen as tempters who prevent the attainment of nirvana.
